# Description of Changes
There's no current linter running over our TypeScript code, which means
we've got a bunch of dead code and other code smells around with nothing
notifying us. This PR adds ESLint with the typescript-eslint plugin and
enables the recommended settings as a starting point for us.
I've disabled all of the failing rules for the scope of this PR, just to
get linting running without causing a massive diff. I'll follow up with
future PRs that enable the failing rules one by one.
Also updates our version of TypeScript, which introduces a new type
error in the code (which I've had to fix)

Fix Split to be a single file interface ( #4327 )

# Description of Changes
Split was previously incorrectly marked as a multi-file interface, which
meant that if you fed 2 files into it, it'd just process the first and
discard the second.
This PR changes it to a single-file interface, and implements a custom
response handler because Split returns Zip files instead of PDFs, so the
response you get when running Split now is the union of all of the split
input files in the workbench (or them all zipped if you download it).

V2 Make FileId type opaque and use consistently throughout project ( #4307 )

# Description of Changes
The `FileId` type in V2 currently is just defined to be a string. This
makes it really easy to accidentally pass strings into things accepting
file IDs (such as file names). This PR makes the `FileId` type [an
opaque
type](https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/typescript/opaque-types-in-typescript/ ),
so it is compatible with things accepting strings (arguably not ideal
for this...) but strings are not compatible with it without explicit
conversion.
The PR also includes changes to use `FileId` consistently throughout the
project (everywhere I could find uses of `fileId: string`), so that we
have the maximum benefit from the type safety.
> [!note]
> I've marked quite a few things as `FIX ME` where we're passing names
in as IDs. If that is intended behaviour, I'm happy to remove the fix me
and insert a cast instead, but they probably need comments explaining
why we're using a file name as an ID.

The rainbow mode easter egg doesn't work very well at the moment and
isn't needed for the demo (and is too easy to accidentally enable). This
PR disables it completely by adding a global const to short-circuit the

# Description of Changes
This PR refactors the frontend icon system to remove reliance on
@mui/icons-material and the Google Material Symbols webfont.
🔄 Changes
Introduced a new LocalIcon component powered by Iconify.
Added scripts/generate-icons.js to:
Scan the codebase for used icons.
Extract only required Material Symbols from
@iconify-json/material-symbols.
Generate a minimized JSON bundle and TypeScript types.
Updated .gitignore to exclude generated icon files.
Replaced all <span className="material-symbols-rounded"> and MUI icon
imports with <LocalIcon> usage.
Removed material-symbols CSS import and related font dependency.
Updated tsconfig.json to support JSON imports.
Added prebuild/predev hooks to auto-generate the icons.
✅ Benefits
No more 5MB+ Google webfont download → reduces initial page load size.
Smaller install footprint → no giant @mui/icons-material dependency.
Only ships the icons we actually use, cutting bundle size further.
Type-safe icons via auto-generated MaterialSymbolIcon union type.
Note most MUI not included in this update since they are low priority
due to small SVG sizing (don't grab whole bundle)

V2 Fix subcategory names in All Tools (and search) pane ( #4252 )

# Description of Changes
Because we used string typing for IDs and names, it was really easy to
make mistakes where variables named like `subcategory` would be stored
as an ID in one file, but then read assuming it's a name in another
file. This PR changes the code to consistently use enum cases when
referring to IDs of categories, subcategories, and tools (at least in as
many places as I can find them, ~I had to add a `ToolId` enum for this
work~ I originally added a `ToolId` type for this work, but it caused
too many issues when merging with #4222 so I've pulled it back out for
now).
Making that change made it obvious where we were inconsistently passing
IDs and reading them as names etc. allowing me to fix rendering issues
in the All Tools pane, where the subcategory IDs were being rendered
directly (instead of being translated) or where IDs were being
translated into names, but were then being re-translated, causing
warnings in the log.

# Description of Changes
This pull request introduces dynamic document meta tag management and
improves URL routing and tool metadata handling in the frontend. The
most significant changes are the addition of a custom hook to update
document meta tags (including OpenGraph tags) based on the selected
tool, enhancements to the tool selection context for better URL
synchronization, and enrichment of the `Tool` type and tool registry
with more metadata.
**Dynamic document meta management:**
* Added a new `useDocumentMeta` hook that updates the page's `<title>`,
description, and OpenGraph meta tags based on the currently selected
tool, and restores the original values on cleanup.

Implementation of Sanitize UI for V2.
Also removes parameter validation from standard tool hooks because the
logic would have to be duplicated between parameter handling and
operation hooks, and the nicer workflow is for the tools to reject using

checking it, since that can't appear in the UI.

Enforce type checking in CI ( #4126 )

# Description of Changes
Currently, the `tsconfig.json` file enforces strict type checking, but
nothing in CI checks that the code is actually correctly typed. [Vite
only transpiles TypeScript
code](https://vite.dev/guide/features.html#transpile-only ) so doesn't
ensure that the TS code we're running is correct.
This PR adds running of the type checker to CI and fixes the type errors
that have already crept into the codebase.
Note that many of the changes I've made to 'fix the types' are just
using `any` to disable the type checker because the code is under too
much churn to fix anything properly at the moment. I still think
enabling the type checker now is the best course of action though
because otherwise we'll never be able to fix all of them, and it should
at least help us not break things when adding new code.

# Description of Changes

# Description of Changes
refactor(eml-to-pdf): Enhance compliance with PDF/ISO standards and MIME
specifications
This commit refactors the EML-to-PDF conversion utility to improve
standards compliance, implementing requirements from multiple RFCs and
ISO specifications:
### Standards Compliance Implemented:
• **PDF Standards (ISO 32000-1:2008)**: Added PDF version validation in
`attachFilesToPdf()`
to ensure 1.7+ compatibility for Unicode file embeddings
• **MIME Processing (RFC 2045/2046)**: Implemented case-insensitive MIME
type handling
in `processPartAdvanced()` with `toLowerCase(Locale.ROOT)` normalization
• **Content Encoding (RFC 2047)**: Enhanced `safeMimeDecode()` with
UTF-8→ISO-8859-1
charset fallback chains for robust header decoding
• **Content-ID Processing (RFC 2392)**: Added proper Content-ID
stripping with
`replaceAll("[<>]", "")` for embedded image references
• **Multipart Safety (RFC 2046)** (best practice, not compliance
related): Implemented recursion depth limiting (max 10 levels)
• **processMultipartAdvanced()**, setCatalogViewerPreferences used to
set PageMode.USE_ATTACHMENTS, but PDF spec 12.2 (Viewer Preferences)
requires a /ViewerPreferences dictionary for full control (e.g.,
/DisplayDocTitle). Docs suggested setting additional prefs like
/NonFullScreenPageMode to ensure attachments panel opens reliably across
viewers
• **addAttachmentAnnotationToPage**, annotations are set to
/Invisible=true but must remain interactive. PDF spec 12.5.6.15 (File
Attachment Annotations) requires /F flags to control print/view (e.g.,
NoPrint if not printable).
### Technical Improvements:
• **Coordinate System Handling**: Added rotation-aware coordinate
transformations
in PDF annotation placement following ISO 32000-1 Section 8.3
• **Charset Fallbacks**: Implemented progressive charset detection with
UTF-8
primary and ISO-8859-1 fallback in MIME decoding
• **Error Resilience**: Enhanced exception handling with specific error
types and
proper resource cleanup using try-with-resources patterns
• **HTML5 Compliance**: Updated email HTML generation with proper
DOCTYPE and
charset declarations for browser compatibility
### Security & Robustness:
• **Input Validation**: Added comprehensive null checks and boundary
validation
throughout attachment and multipart processing
• **XSS Prevention**: All user content now processed through
`escapeHtml()` or
`CustomHtmlSanitizer` before HTML generation
### Code Quality:
• **Method Signatures**: Updated `processMultipartAdvanced()` to include
depth
parameter for recursion tracking
• **Switch Expressions**: Modernized switch statements to use Java 17+
arrow syntax
where applicable
• **Documentation**: Added inline RFC/ISO references for
compliance-critical sections
All changes maintain backward compatibility while significantly
improving standards
adherence. Tested with various EML formats.
No major change. No change in tests. No change in aesthetic of the
resulting PDF. No change change in "user space" (except when user relied
on compliance of aforementioned stuff then a major improvement)

feature: import and export bookmarks to clipboard ( #4093 )

# Description of Changes
- add **import** and **export buttons** to bookmark editor (bottom
right) to **copy and past bookmark data**
- the export reads the hidden `<input id="bookmarkData">` field and uses
`navigator.clipboard.writeText()` to copy it to the clipboard
- the import reads from `navigator.clipboard.readText()` and sets the
internal `bookmarks` variable, which is used to update the UI elements
- after successful import or export, the buttons flash in green to give
visual feedback to the user
- this provides non-technical users with an intuitive method to copy
bookmarks between files
- I have seen, that this is also possible with the pipeline tool, but
this requires multiple steps and familiarity with the pipeline:
1. use `extract-bookmarks` to generate `bookmarks.json`
2. open the file and copy the data
3. use `edit-table-of-contents` with the copied data
4. process the target file
- challenges:
- I used `navigator.clipboard` as opposed to `document.execCommand`. The
latter is used in `account.html`, `errorBanner.html` and
`errorBanner.js`, but is
[deprecated](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Document/execCommand ).
- I used the bootstrap-style rendering for the title attribute tooltip
for visual consistency in the bookmark editor, where the tooltip hovers
centered above the originating element. However, in most other places
the title tooltip follows the cursor and is slightly visually different.
- in case you are testing this on a mobile device (EDIT: or non-locally
hosted), the copy-to-clipboard might fail when hosted without SSL
(mobile only works in secure environment)
- similarly, when not using normal user interaction (i.e.
`element.click()` via console) the copy-to-clipboard will throw an error
`Clipboard write was blocked due to lack of user activation.`
